A most interesting article from Private Eye 1354, 29th November, regarding householders and what happens when the land they buy is found to be contaminated.

Now, no doubt T&MBC would say " Crest Nicholson are remediating the site under an approved methodology, and would be liable for any failings". But Crest are a commercial operation, and as I recall they are the second developer here, the first having gone bust! And it is not unheard of for companies to declare bankruptcy to avoid crippling liabilities. Many companies trade under several different associated names in order to cut off arms that develop liabilities. Now I am not for one second suggesting that Crest would resort to such tactics, but would I buy a house there? Hmmmm, have to think deeply about that one. And remember, this isn't just a scattering of asbestos on the surface, we are talking of a 19 metre deep landfill. Scroll down to read scanned copy
